Short report: Factors contributing to young people's susceptibility to e-cigarettes in four countries

Identifying young people who are susceptible to e-cigarettes is important for developing interventions designed to discourage uptake. Current evidence in a broader range of national contexts is needed given recent surges in youth e-cigarette use in many countries and the constantly evolving nature of vaping products and the promotional strategies used by the industry to increase their appeal.

A Lightweight convolutional neural network for nicotine prediction in tobacco by near-infrared spectroscopy

The content of nicotine, a critical component of tobacco, significantly influences the quality of tobacco leaves. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a widely used technique for rapid, non-destructive, and environmentally friendly analysis of nicotine levels in tobacco.

NIR and THz spectroscopy: an experimental investigation towards nicotine-related devices

This study examined the content of nicotine-delivery products using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) and breath ethylene investigated with CO2 laser photoacoustic spectroscopy (CO2 LPAS) system as a biomarker of oxidative stress after smoking. The THz-TDS method provided valuable information on the transmission spectra of tobacco and nicotine in smoking products.

E-Cigarette price impacts legal and black-market cigarette purchasing under a hypothetical reduced-nicotine cigarette standard

Introduction: The Tobacco Control Act gives the US FDA authority to establish a reduced-nicotine content standard in combusted cigarettes. This future potential regulation may pose a significant public health benefit; however, black markets may arise to meet demand for normal-nicotine content cigarettes among smokers unwilling to transition to or use an alternative product.

Smoke Screen: Estimating the Tax Pass-Through to Cigarette Prices in Pakistan

Smoke Screen: Estimating the Tax Pass-Through to Cigarette Prices in Pakistan

This paper estimates the magnitude and speed of tax pass-through across tobacco products at different price points in Pakistan by using a novel dataset of monthly observations on cigarette prices in 50 cities during the period 2004-2015. The pass-through of cigarette taxes to retail prices is found to occur within two months, but is mostly incomplete in magnitude. On average, a one-rupee tax increase is estimated to lead to an increase of only PRs 0.8 in retail cigarette prices.
