Researchers used US PATH Study data from 2013 to 2023 to examine what happened when exclusive cigarette smokers either continued smoking, began using cigarettes and ENDS together, or switched completely to ENDS.
People who switched completely to ENDS reported the largest reduction in overall nicotine dependence. Dual users showed a smaller overall reduction and were more likely to reduce cigarette consumption, but their cigarette-specific dependence changed little.
