Ameliorative effect of methanolic extract of Tribulus terrestris L. on nicotine and lead-induced degeneration of sperm quality in male rats

Findings showed that T. terrestris plant methanolic extracts ameliorated nicotine hydrogen tartrate and lead-induced degeneration of sperm quality in male rats. The GC-MS analysis of the T. terrestris plant methanolic extracts revealed the presence of several important bioactive compounds which were thought to be responsible for the ameliorative effect. Further isolation and evaluation of the individual components would provide relevant lead to finding new drugs.

Managing missing items in the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence: a simulation study

The Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) is frequently used to assess the level of smokers' nicotine dependence; however, it is unclear how to manage missing items. The aim of this study was to investigate different methods for managing missing items in the FTND.

Nicotine Administration Normalizes Behavioral and Neurophysiological Perturbations in the MAM Rodent Model of Schizophrenia

Together, these findings of NIC-induced improvement of deficits lend support for a "self-medication" hypothesis behind increased cigarette smoking in SCZ and illustrate the potential utility of nicotinic modulation in future pharmacotherapies for certain SCZ symptoms.

Trans-placental transfer of nicotine: Modulation by organic cation transporters

Nicotine is a highly addictive substance and harmful to the developing foetus. However, few studies have investigated the transporter mechanism responsible for regulating the transfer of nicotine across the blood-placental interface. A multiple in-vivo microdialysis system coupled to ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was developed to monitor simultaneously nicotine and cotinine in the blood, placenta, foetus, and amniotic fluid of pregnant rats.

Nicotine-mediated OTUD3 downregulation inhibits VEGF-C mRNA decay to promote lymphatic metastasis of human esophageal cancer

This study establishes that the OTUD3/ZFP36/VEGF-C axis plays a vital role in nicotine addiction-induced lymphatic metastasis, suggesting that OTUD3 may serve as a prognostic marker, and induction of the VEGF-C mRNA decay might be a potential therapeutic strategy against human esophageal cancer.

Chronic nicotine increases midbrain dopamine neuron activity and biases individual strategies towards reduced exploration in mice

Long-term exposure to nicotine alters brain circuits and induces profound changes in decision-making strategies, affecting behaviors both related and unrelated to drug seeking and consumption. Using an intracranial self-stimulation reward-based foraging task, we investigated in mice the impact of chronic nicotine on midbrain dopamine neuron activity and its consequence on the trade-off between exploitation and exploration.
