People process nicotine at different rates. Researchers examined whether a faster rate of nicotine metabolism might be linked with myocardial infarction, or heart attack, among people with HIV who smoked cigarettes.
The study compared 135 people who experienced a heart attack with 252 matched controls. Faster nicotine metabolism appeared somewhat more common in the heart-attack group, but the association was not statistically significant.
