Smokeless tobacco is an established cause of several cancers, including cancers of the mouth. DNA adducts form when certain chemicals bind to DNA and are considered important steps in the process that can lead to cancer.
This study compared oral cells from 24 people who used smokeless tobacco with 25 people who used no tobacco or nicotine products. Several measured DNA adducts were significantly higher among smokeless tobacco users.
