Association of Daily E-Cigarette Use Duration With Anxiety in Adolescents: A Comparison With Cigarette-Only and Dual Use

Methods: Data came from the 2024 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey of 54,653 students. Main analyses included 992 current cigarette-only, e-cigarette-only or dual users.

Results: Longer daily e-cigarette use and dual use were significantly associated with higher GAD-7 anxiety scores. Duration of cigarette-only use was not significantly associated in the same way.

Additional finding: Negative health perception showed statistically significant but small indirect effects.

Limitation: The cross-sectional design and modest effect sizes mean that causation cannot be established.

Tobacco and Marijuana Induce Adverse Effects on Cardiac Function and Platelet Activity and Reduce Tissue Preservation Following Myocardial Infarction

Methods: Male and female rats were exposed to emissions from cigarettes, JUUL e-cigarettes, IQOS heated tobacco, marijuana cigarettes, cannabinoid-depleted marijuana cigarettes or clean air.

Findings: Single exposures to some products impaired measures of cardiac function. Repeated exposure to several products increased platelet aggregation. Four weeks of repeated tobacco or marijuana exposure before experimentally induced myocardial infarction was associated with greater infarct size.

Important limitation: This was an animal experiment. The results help identify possible mechanisms but do not directly measure cardiovascular outcomes in people.

Transcranial Photobiomodulation Variables Assessment Battery: Development and Validation

Purpose: The researchers developed and evaluated a self-report battery for variables that may influence response to transcranial photobiomodulation.

Prolonged Zero-Nicotine E-Cigarette Exposure Disrupts Blood-Brain Barrier Integrity and Promotes Neuroinflammation: Evidence from In-Vitro and In-Vivo Models

Purpose: The study investigated whether short-term and prolonged exposure to zero-nicotine e-cigarette aerosol affects blood-brain barrier integrity.

Methods: Researchers used an in-vitro blood-brain barrier cell model and male and female mice exposed to zero-nicotine aerosol.

Findings: In laboratory models, prolonged exposure reduced measures of barrier integrity and increased permeability. In mice, 14-day exposure reduced some tight-junction proteins and increased several inflammatory cytokines, while seven-day exposure did not show the same significant changes.

Important limitation: These are laboratory and animal findings and should not be interpreted as direct evidence of the same health effects in humans.

Beyond Quitting: Uncovering Gaps in Reporting Dual Use in Trials of E-Cigarettes for Smoking Cessation

Purpose: The researchers examined how often e-cigarette smoking-cessation trials report continued use of both e-cigarettes and combustible cigarettes.

Methods: Seventy-one eligible peer-reviewed trials from a recent Cochrane review and meta-analysis were assessed.

Results: 57 trials did not report dual-use prevalence, one allowed it to be derived and 12 reported it directly. Reported prevalence ranged from 6.6% to 89.5%, with a mean of 42.6% at four weeks.

Conclusion: Dual use is reported infrequently and inconsistently, which limits interpretation of smoking-cessation and public health outcomes.
