Perceptions and Patterns of Cigarette and E-Cigarette Use among Hispanics: A Heterogeneity Analysis of the 2017-2019 Health Information National Trends Survey

There are documented disparities in smoking behaviors among Hispanic adults in the U.S., but little is known about patterns of e-cigarette use. Using data from the HINTS 5 cycle 1-3, we examined cigarette and e-cigarette history and current use, as well as perceptions of the dangers of e-cigarette use relative to cigarette use. Primary predictors were Hispanic ethnic group, gender, age, education, income, and English language proficiency.

Intention to lose weight and use of electronic cigarettes among adolescents

Electronic cigarette use among American adolescents is a major public health concern given the negative health consequences of nicotine in youth. Recent literature has shown that weight control may be one motivation for use in this population. This study examined associations between intention to lose weight and e-cigarette use among adolescents having overweight or obesity from an ethnically diverse sample of Texas youth by gender.

Given the rapidly expanding marketplace for Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), it is important to monitor patterns of use, particularly among vulnerable populations. This study examined ENDS prevalence, reasons for use (i.e., to help quit smoking and for appealing flavors), and toxin exposure among U.S. women of reproductive age using data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study (2013-17).

Flavors in tobacco products may be salient drivers of tobacco product use among people with overweight or obesity. Yet, whether perceived appeal of e-cigarettes with different flavors varies as a function of weight status is unknown. Purpose: To conduct secondary data analyses of a laboratory experiment to examine whether weight moderates differences in perceived appeal of fruit, menthol, and tobacco flavored e-cigarettes in young adults who vape.
