Nicotine and Health Research Paper

Nicotine binds to the transthyretin-thyroxine complex and reduces its uptake by placental trophoblasts

If nicotine influences trophoblast turnover of transthyretin, then it may directly affect placental transfer of T4 to the developing fetus and contribute to the negative impacts of smoking on fetal growth, development and placental function.

Sex differences and heritability of adrenal steroidogenesis in offspring rats induced by prenatal nicotine exposure

The epidemiological investigation has suggested prenatal nicotine exposure (PNE) induces multiorgan developmental toxicity and increases the risk of metabolic diseases in offspring. Our previous study found that the occurrence of fetal-originated diseases was associated with abnormal adrenal development in offspring.

The Antioxidant Properties of Alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.) and Its Biochemical, Antioxidant, Anti-Inflammatory, and Pathological Effects on Nicotine-Induced Oxidative Stress in the Rat Liver

Medicago sativa Linn or alfalfa is a tonic plant rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals that is used to treat many diseases due to its pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. So, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of alfalfa methanolic extract (AME) on the prevention of liver damage caused by nicotine.

Calmidazolium induces a decrease in nicotine-induced currents and intracellular calcium levels after pulse application of nicotine onto insect neurosecretory cells

Dorsal unpaired median (DUM) neurons, are a class of insect neurosecretory cells, which are involved in the control of several functions, such as excretion and reproduction, or the release of neurohormones. Previous studies demonstrated that they express different nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subtypes, in particular α-bungarotoxin-insensitive receptors, with nAChR1 and nAChR2 subtypes.

Nicotine induced ototoxicity in rat cochlear organotypic cultures

Epidemiological evidence has shown that smoking is associated with an increased risk of hearing loss. However, the underlying mechanisms regarding the impact of nicotine on the cochlea remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the cytotoxic effects of nicotine on cochlear cells using cultured cochlear basilar membranes.
