New smartwatch app 'could help smokers quit'

A new smartwatch app which intervenes when typical hand movements of smoking are detected could help people quit, researchers say. Technology developed at the University of Bristol uses motion sensors to pick up on cigarette use and delivers a vibration alert with a text message offering support.

Another Study on Flavored Vaping Products the FDA Can Ignore

The Food and Drug Administration has been particularly resistant to approving the sale of vaping products that are not flavored like cigarettes. The vast majority of the vaping products approved to date have been tobacco flavored. A small handful, approved more recently, have been menthol flavored. The thousands of marketing applications for products with other flavors have been denied. Thus, there are no FDA-permitted vaping products on the market that provide consumers with a flavor different from that provided by cigarettes.

Mills' budget proposes increasing the cigarette tax for first time in 20 years

Gov. Janet Mills' $11.6 billion two-year spending plan includes a proposed tax increase on cigarettes and other tobacco products. The state tax would rise from $2 to $3 a pack, the first increase in 20 years. Maine currently has one of the lowest cigarette taxes in New England and is only a few cents above the national average of $1.93 per pack, according to the American Lung Association.
