Declining Trends in Smokeless Tobacco Use Among Indian Women: Findings From Global Adult Tobacco Survey I and II

Smokeless Tobacco (SLT) use is culturally rooted and more acceptable among women in India. SLT is a significant risk for oral cancers and has other adverse health outcomes on women's general as well as reproductive health. This study aimed to estimate and compare the prevalence and correlates of SLT among adult females in India using Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), 2009-2010 (GATS 1) and 2016-2017 (GATS 2).

Differential Effects of 'Vaping' on Lipid and Glucose Profiles and Liver Metabolic Markers in Obese Versus Non-obese Mice

Tobacco smoking increases the risk of metabolic disorders due to the combination of harmful chemicals, whereas pure nicotine can improve glucose tolerance. E-cigarette vapour contains nicotine and some of the harmful chemicals found in cigarette smoke at lower levels. To investigate how e-vapour affects metabolic profiles, male Balb/c mice were exposed to a high-fat diet (HFD, 43% fat, 20kJ/g) for 16weeks, and e-vapour in the last 6weeks. HFD alone doubled fat mass and caused dyslipidaemia and glucose intolerance.

Impact of exclusive e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products use on muco-ciliary clearance

Tobacco smoking impairs mucociliary clearance (MCC) efficiency as shown by prolonged saccharin test transit time (STTT). Avoiding exposure to tobacco smoke from combustible cigarettes may restore MCC function and former smokers have been shown to exhibit similar STTT as never smokers. The impact on STTT of switching from smoking to combustion-free tobacco products such as e-cigarettes (ECs) and heated tobacco products (HTPs) is not known.

The Link Between Depressive Symptoms and Vaping Nicotine in U.S. Adolescents, 2017-2019

While there is a well-established association between depression and cigarette use, the mental health sequelae of vaping nicotine remain unclear. This study examined whether adolescents with depressive symptoms had higher odds of vaping nicotine than others, and how this association differed when examining vaping with cigarette use, vaping without cigarette use, and cigarette use alone.
