Use of Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes to Predict the Cardiotoxicity Potential of Next Generation Nicotine Products

Combustible cigarette smoking is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease. By contrast, the cardiotoxicity potential of non-combustible next generation nicotine products (NGPs), which includes heated tobacco products (HTPs) and electronic vaping products (EVPs), and how this compares relative to combustible cigarettes is currently an area of scientific exploration. As such, there is a need for a rapid screening assay to assess this endpoint.

Dual use of e-cigarettes with conventional tobacco is associated with increased sleep latency in cross-sectional Study

The health effects of e-cigarettes remain relatively unknown, including their impact on sleep quality. We previously showed in a pilot study that females who smoke both conventional tobacco and vape e-cigarettes (dual users) had decreased sleep quality (measurement of how well an individual is sleeping) and increased sleep latency (amount of time to fall asleep), suggesting an influence by gender. Cough is also known to adversely impact sleep quality and may be caused by inhalant use. As a result, we undertook this study to assess the impact of e-cigarette, conventional tobacco, and dual use on sleep quality, sleep latency, cough, and drug use.

Updated Health and Cost Impacts of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, Using Recent Estimates of Relative Harm for Vaping Compared to Smoking

Measuring population health and costs effects of liberalizing access to electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) is an evolving field with high persisting uncertainty. A critical area of uncertainty for policy-makers are estimates of net harms from ENDS relative to cigarettes, therefore, we model these harms using updated estimates incorporating disease specificity.

Potential risk factors of smokeless tobacco consumption among adolescents in South India

Although most of the disease burden is due to tobacco smoking, smokeless tobacco (SLT) use contributed to an estimated 76,000 deaths in 2017. We have studied the potential risk factors for SLT use among adolescents in South India.

A Neurochemical and Electrophysiological Study on the Combined Effects of Caffeine and Nicotine in the Cortex of Rats

These findings suggest that caffeine and nicotine adversely exacerbate their stimulant effects manifested by the EEG changes mediated by increasing cholinergic transmission and disturbing the balance between the excitatory and inhibitory amino acids leading to oxidative stress.

Association between smokeless tobacco use and oral cavity cancer risk in women compared with men: a systematic review and meta-analysis

The impact of smokeless tobacco (SLT) use on the risk of oral cavity cancer (OCC) has been confirmed; however, the sex-based difference in this association remains inconclusive. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the association between SLT use and OCC risk in women and compared it to that in men.

Compositional profile of mucosal bacteriome of smokers and smokeless tobacco users

A distinct taxonomic and functional profile of oral microbiome in smokers and smokeless tobacco users as compared to healthy controls implicates a significant role of microbes and their metabolites in diseases associated with tobacco use including oral cancer.
