Cardiovascular functions and arterial stiffness after JUUL use

Changes in blood pressure and arterial stiffness are similar after cigarette smoking and JUUL use. These changes may be associated with an increased cardiovascular risk compared with no product use. However, a long-term follow-up evaluation of JUUL use and a head-to-head comparison with conventional e-cigarettes are still needed.

Plasma Menthol Glucuronide as a Biomarker for the Behavioral Effects of Menthol and Nicotine in Humans

This secondary analysis sought to determine if plasma menthol glucuronide (MG) concentrations predict changes in three outcomes, subjective drug effects, urges to smoke, and heart rate, following concurrent inhaled menthol and intravenous nicotine.

Impact of delivery rate on the acute response to intravenous nicotine: A human laboratory study with implications for regulatory science

Faster delivery rate enhances the abuse potential of drugs of abuse, yet systematic studies on the impact of delivery rate on the acute effects of nicotine in humans are lacking. Using an intravenous (IV) nicotine infusion procedure that allows precise control of rate of delivery, we examined the impact of nicotine delivery rate on the positive subjective drug effects, smoking urges, withdrawal, heart rate, blood pressure and attention function in smokers.

Blood Nicotine Predicts the Behavioral Economic Abuse Liability of Reduced-Nicotine Cigarettes

Cigarette smoking continues to be a major health concern and remains the leading preventable cause of death in the US. Recent efforts have been made to determine the potential health and policy benefits of reducing nicotine in combustible cigarettes. The degree to which changes in blood nicotine relate to measures of the abuse liability of reduced-nicotine cigarettes is unknown. The current study examined the relation between blood nicotine and behavioral economic demand measures of cigarettes differing in nicotine content.

Exercise Training Attenuates Cardiac Vulnerability and Promotes Cardiac Resistance to Isoproterenol-Induced Injury Following Hookah Smoke Inhalation in Male Rats: Role of Klotho and Sirtuins

Hookah smoking is on the rise around the world. Present study investigated the heart resistance to harmful stress following long-term waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) and moderate-intensity exercise training intervention in male Wistar rats.

The Protective Effects of Combination Vitamin E and Swimming Exercise on Memory Impairment Induced by Exposure to Waterpipe Smoke

Waterpipe smoking (WP) exposure has a negative health impact including memory deficit which was attributed to elevation of oxidative stress. Vitamin E (VitE) or swimming exercise have protective effects that prevent memory impairment. In the current study, the modulation of WP-induced memory impairment by the combined effect of VitE and swimming exercise (SE) was investigated.

miR-338-5p Levels and Cigarette Smoking are Associated With Neuropathic Pain Severity in Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury: Preliminary Findings From a Genome-Wide microRNA Expression Profiling Screen

Our findings suggest that miR-338-5p and cigarette smoking may both play a role in the development or maintenance of neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury. While additional work is needed to confirm these findings, validated target analysis suggests a neuroprotective role of miR-338-5p in modulating neuroinflammation and neuronal apoptosis and that its downregulation may result in maladaptive neuroplastic mechanisms contributing to neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury.
